Watch a man blither in his own ignorance. At 5′-7″ I think Bob Costas’ mouth is wider than his height. This weekend he opened it up to show his true ignorance. He took a completely tragic event and made it into a call to mobilize the gun-grabbers to push for more anti gun legislation. When I say tragic, I am not talking about the lousy NFL player (whose name I will not mention) but his victims in this heinous crime he committed. Those victims are 22 year old Kasandra Perkins and her small child who will grow up without natural parents.
Further more, this was not a simple case of what we like to call domestic violence these days. That title makes the crimes seem so much more civil. This was cold blooded murder of a defenseless person. Don’t try to tell me this football player was a good guy and that all this was caused by a head injury having a bad day. If he had enough senses to know how to operate a gun and to thank his coaches before he blew his own brains out, he knew exactly what he was doing.
Bob Costas knows all this too but he doesn’t want to fade into obscurity and wants to transcend the moment and make this about himself. So he gets some airtime during a football broadcast and preaches to the viewers how they should think. I know that sours me even more on the NFL, a league that I think has turned into a sport of the moment rather than the long term entertainment it once was.
What is this term “gun culture”? I am offended by the fact that everyone who owns a gun is placed into this category that the anti-gunners want to fit us into every time a horrible crime is committed with a firearm. There is no such thing as a “gun culture”. There is a crime culture, I do know that. And I also know that those who commit crimes use all sorts of tools. I saw where a man used a baseball bat to slay someone once. Does that make us a “bat culture”. I saw where a man murdered a woman with a knife. Does that make us a “knife culture”? The truth is that there are people from all political and philosophical persuasions who own guns and they do not all have things in common that could possibly link them into a single culture. I own guns but not for the same reason as Machine Gun Kelly. I have nothing in common with Billy the Kid or Jesse James and certainly would not find any cultural similarities with John Allen Muhammad. Yet, because of one thing in common, we both own a gun, all the sudden we are part of the same culture? Mr. Costas, I think millions of citizens are offended by that phrase you uttered and I call on you to retract that rude remark and apologize to all those millions of people whom you linked with this cowardly murderer today!
One more thing, Bob Costas ends the speech saying that if this murderer did not possess a gun, he and Kassandra Perkins would still be alive today. Well, if so, then if O.J. Simpson would have not possessed a knife, Nicole Brown Simpson would still be alive today.
